The Bridge Recovery Community Launching in April

Our new Recovery Ministry is called “The Bridge Recovery Community.” It will be meeting on Wednesday nights, starting on April 11. The Bridge is for people who struggle with addiction in its various forms, as well as friends and family of addicts, and people struggling to overcome past hurts. It features teaching about addiction, 12 Step recovery, the spiritual questions and challenges of recovery, codependence, and more.

We meet at 7:00pm in a large group, and then break into smaller groups for discussion. More information to come!

Our Mission

In December 2011, we went through a process to evaluate and reaffirm our mission statement as a church. Here is our updated mission statement:

Our mission is to partner with God and our community to love, serve, and support our neighbors.

We do this through:

  • Seeking to learn and follow the way of Jesus
  • Gathering for participative worship services
  • Using our gifts to serve each other and our neighbors
  • Growing in friendship and care for one another
  • Reaching out with acceptance and love

Upcoming Messages at Jacob’s Well

We are studying Jesus’ teaching in the Sermon on the Mount. Right now we’re looking at Jesus’ teaching on some of today’s most important – and difficult – subjects. It is instructive, and often surprising, to reflect on what Jesus has to say about the things that we often struggle with today.

But beware: understanding Jesus’ words is not always such a straightforward proposition. These words were spoken 2000 years ago in a different social context. Applying these teachings to our lives today requires understanding and careful discernment.

Quote of the week

Each Sunday as part of our worship, we invite someone in our community to share a picture, poem, or quote that they have found especially meaningful in their lives. We invite them to bring this quote to our Sunday gathering, and show or read it to us, and then tell us why it is meaningful to them. Here are some recent quotes:

April 1 – From Charlene B.

“My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going. I do not see the road ahead of me. I cannot know for certain where it will end. Nor do I really know myself, and the fact that I think I am following your will does not mean that I am actually doing so. But I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you and I hope that I have that desire in all that I am doing. And I know that if I do this, you will lead me by the right road, although I may know nothing about it. Therefore will I trust you always though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death, I will not fear, for you are ever with me and you will never leave me to face my perils alone.” – Thomas Merton

March 18 - From Dan K.

“1 The LORD is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
3 he refreshes my soul.
He guides me along the right paths
for his name’s sake.
4 Even though I walk
through the darkest valley,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.
5 You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
6 Surely your goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the LORD
forever.”

-Psalm 23

March 4 – From Emily N

“Faith is…understanding that my ‘experiences with God’ won’t cause a fraction of an inch of spiritual growth unless they are hammered out in daily relationship.”

New nursery open …

We’ve recently completed the renovation of one of the rooms in our church building, and have opened it up as our new nursery! Thanks to the volunteers who helped create this space. We hope that Jacob’s Well can be a place where children – as well as adults – can experience God’s love.

Sonshine Express Pre-School Program

Sonshine Express is a preschool program that meets at Jacob’s Well. We still have room for more children in our Fall program!

Sonshine Express is a faith-based preschool. Our program is  designed to help your child grow intellectually, physically,  emotionally, socially, and creatively. Our classes are held on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9:00am to 11:30am.

Our Goals Include:

We are a new church in Evergreen Park, Illinois.
We are seeking to be learners and followers of Jesus Christ.

Our services are informal and participative.
You are welcome to ask questions and make comments …
not simply sit back and be preached at.
You can be yourself, wear what you want,
and bring your doubts as well as your faith.

We are a community of neighbors and friends …
not just a church that holds services.
We’d love to meet you!
